Many teenagers can appreciate taking a trip to the mall and buying a new outfit, but with prices on the rise, this hobby is quickly becoming less and less economical. So, what may be the best alternative option? Going thrifting is perfect for affordable, cute and vintage pieces for individuals to add to their collections. Luckily, Seattle is home to many thrift and secondhand stores: well-known ones like Goodwill or Value Village and small businesses such as Rax Vintage and Crossroads Trading also are great options.

Goodwill and Value Village are both known around the nation for having older more worn articles of clothing with a vintage feel. For those looking for a fun, though potentially time-consuming thrifting experience, the Goodwill bins in SODO is a great location. Prices are by weight and not individual items, making it more affordable. The downside is that shoppers must dig in large bins to find items they like, so bringing rubber gloves may be helpful to be more sanitary and comfortable.

Some of the smaller thrift stores are just a quick drive across the 520 bridge is the UW campus, with its well-known University Way, or more known as “The Ave.” On this street, there are many popular thrift shops. Rax Vintage recently opened last summer and is becoming increasingly known for its great clothing pieces, but also a fun environment. When visiting, the owners welcomed my friends and I with big smiles, and during checkout gave us generous discounts. It is uniquely decorated with spray painted walls, and prices are incredible for rare items, such as Arc’teryx jackets, vintage Dior, and Carhartt jackets. For those who get impatient thrifting, Rax keeps you entertained, and it isn’t necessary to spend hours to find good clothes. Just down the street, is Crossroads Trading consignment store. It is well-organized and easy to find specific clothing. They aim to keep their prices low for their customers and is a perfect starting point for new thrifters.

Each of these locations are unique and have different styles, being perfect for those who are trying to figure out their favorite way to thrift. Thrifting is an enjoyable, yet time consuming activity. The best thing to keep in mind while shopping is to be patient, because with time, the perfect pieces will be found.
