How to Prevent Burnout

AP testing season is quickly approaching at Bellevue High School, and students are finding themselves drowning in their studies. While preparing for exams is important, pushing yourself too hard can lead to burnout—mental and physical exhaustion that can hurt your performance. To stay on top of your studies without burning out, consider these strategies:

1. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity

Studying for hours on end may seem productive, but it’s more effective to focus on shorter, high-quality study sessions. Senior Kate Cha recommends using a Pomodoro timer, splitting her study sessions into 25-minute intervals, with five-minute breaks in between.

“It’s life changing, and I’m so much more productive when I use it,” said Cha.

2. Get Enough Sleep

Although some may think that pulling all-nighters before a test is a good idea, not getting enough sleep will actually hinder your progress and focus. Aim for at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night to ensure you are well-rested and able to absorb information efficiently.

4. Avoid Cramming

As psychology teacher Lori Alexander has taught to many students, cramming will only benefit your short-term memory. Therefore, if you really want to absorb knowledge and prepare for upcoming exams, spread out information and don’t stuff it all into one night!

5. Practice Self-Care

Taking time for yourself is just as important as studying. Whether it’s listening to music, watching an episode of your favorite show or hanging out with friends, giving yourself moments to relax will help maintain balance.

6. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

A well-nourished brain performs better. Avoid excessive caffeine and focus on balanced meals with protein, healthy fats and complex carbs to keep your energy up.

By implementing these strategies, you can stay motivated, avoid burnout and perform your best on AP exams. Remember, your well-being comes first—take care of yourself, and the results will follow.
